Korpus Dantzak - Oñati
The tradition of dancing in the festivities of Corpus Christi in Oñati dates back to at least 1560. The dances form part of a much larger community event that spans three days. The dances performed are:
- San Miguelen Zortzikoa (5/8 rhythm)
- San Miguelen Kontrapasa (4/4) rhythm)
- Banakoa (6/8, 3/4 rhythm) (In the afternoon performance in the plaza, a makil dantza is added)
- Arku Dantza (5/8 rhythm)
- Soka Dantza - This does not form part of the Korpus dances, takes place in the plaza in the afternoon on Sunday.
In 1979, Boise's Oinkari adopted the dances from Oñati. Since 1980 they have been performed at Mass as part of Boise's San Inazio celebration. Now, the Boise Oñati dancers are a separate entity from Oinkari although most of the dancers are current or past participants in the group.
