Basque Club of Utah at Carmelite Fair
The Basque Club of Utah will once again participate this weekend in the Carmelite Fair on Sunday, September 15th from 11:00am-5:00pm. This is an annual fundraiser for the club as well as for the Carmelite Nuns who depend on this fair as their main source of income. As always, the Utah’ko Triskalariak will be performing while the club will sell Chorizo Sandwiches at its food booth. For more information, visit them on Facebook.
Dance Lessons at the Basque Cultural Center
Always wanted to join in the dancing at a Basque event, but didn’t know how? Wait no more! The Basque Cultural Center is providing lessons on traditional Basque dances this Saturday, September 14th from 11:00am-12:00pm and again on Monday, September 16th from 7:00pm-8:00pm. Lessons are for all levels and all ages and the goal is “participation, not perfection.” If you are interested, please email Valerie Arrechea.
BEO Screening of Irati
Please join the Basque Educational Organization, in collaboration with the Basque Cultural Center this Friday, September 13th, for the screening of Irati, directed by Paul Urkijo. The event will begin at 7:30pm and reservations are strongly suggested. This film tells the story of the spread of Christianity in the Pyrenees in the 8th century, when a pact is made with the ancient goddess, Irati, to defeat the enemy. William A. Douglass Center For Basque Studies Upcoming Events
The Center for Basque Studies, in collaboration with the UNR Department of English and with the support of the Hilliard Foundation are proud to present various Basque artists and musicians at this year’s Reno Tahoe International Art Show, September 12-15th at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. Artists include Frank Goitia, Mikel Larrea, Leire Urbeltz, Ainhoa Akutain, Hailey Jackson, Alex Arciniega, Arantxa Irujo and Zoe Bray. Center director, Xabier Irujo, will also moderate a panel on Saturday on Basque art, what it is and what it means to be creating contemporary Basque art at this time.
On Thursday, September 12th, “Arias in the Gallery,” will feature Dr. Franco Cavalleri and Maider Ronquete performing arias, Basque folk songs and other pieces by renowned composers like Puccini, Tosti, Gluck and Aita Donostia among others.
On September 14th, another recital, “Echoes of the Basque Homeland,” featuring renowned txistulari, Garikoitz Mendizabal will take place at 6pm. For the complete program of events and exhibits, click here.

The Colorado Euskal Etxea is hosting our upcoming Fall NABO Meeting on September 21st in conjunction with its annual Summer Picnic and NABO Qualifying Mus Tournament. Diaspora Day Concert in New York
The Euzko Etxea of New York is extending its Diaspora Day celebration with a live concert by Maider on Saturday, September 14th at 7pm. Space is limited, so everyone is urged to purchase a ticket ASAP. Her latest album “Biran den Lasaia,” can be heard here, and more information on the event is available on the club’s website.
Nevada Basque Portraits & Illustrations
Basque artist, Zoe Bray, has also let us know about another upcoming exhibit of hers, “Nevada Basque Portraits & Illustrations,” that will be featured at the Nevada Historical Society September 14-December 28, 2024. The exhibit includes a selection of portraits of individuals with a Nevadan Basque connection that explore “the different ways that Basque identity can be made and represented.” There will also be a reception and talk by the artist on October 2nd from 5-7pm with light refreshments.
