Diasporaren Eguna - Diaspora Day
The Basque Government has designated September 8th as Basque Diaspora Day. This date was chosen from several suggestions from Basques around the world, and especially because it coincides with the first circumnavigation of the globe, in 1522, by a crew led by Juan Sebastian Elkano who was from Getaria, Gipuzkoa. By designating a day dedicated to the Basques living outside of the Homeland, activities organized make the Basque presence around the world more visible. If your club/community has something planned, please let the Basque Government know by emailing info@nabasque.eus so that they can compile a comprehensive list of diaspora celebrations. Also let us know at Astero so we can cover your events in an upcoming issue. Oso ondo ospatu!
Gaztemundu 2023
Stay tuned for information about the 2023 edition of the Basque Government's Gaztemundu program. Gaztemundu is a Basque Government program for the youth ages 18-30 of Basque clubs from around the world since 1996. It offers an opportunity to travel to the Basque country and partake in a two week program. The flights and room and board are paid for by the Basque Government - it's an amazing opportunity.
According to Euskal Etxeak Digitala #877, this year the program will be held in Gipuzkoa between December 10th and 22nd. The topic will be cultural management leadership in Basque Clubs. The program will be held in conjunction with the World Congress of Basque Collectivities. The slogan for the congress is "Eraldaroa." You won't find this word in the dictionary. It is a fusion of the word Eralda(tu), change, and Aro(a), time, thus signifying the beginning of a new era in relations between Basque public institutions and the Basque diaspora.
The deadline for applications begins the day after the announcement is published in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country and runs for a month. We will let you know as soon as this occurs. In the meantime, if you are interested, make sure your passport is current, and start thinking about you application!
