Holiday Events at the Basque Museum
The Basque Museum and Cultural Center invites everyone to get into the holiday spirit by joining them for its First Thursday Open House & Sale this Thursday beginning at 5:30pm. The evening will include guided tours, live music, and food, with the kids from the Boiseko Ikastola performing at 7pm. This is also a great opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done and take advantage of First Thursday Savings at the gift store. Wrapping is also free during the entire month of December. The festivities continue next Thursday, December 14th with a presentation by Dr. John Ysursa on Basque holidays and traditions. This event will take place at 6pm in the Museum's classroom. Admission for both events is free and open to the public.
Basque Diaspora Day
We received a letter from the Basque Government's Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Gorka Alvarez, regarding "Basque Diaspora Day." This celebration was proposed at the last World Congress of Basque Collectivities in 2015, whose main theme was "Diasporizatu" (Diasporize). This celebration was proposed in an effort to make the Basque presence more visible around the world, and now the challenge is to find an appropriate date to celebrate it on. They now need everyone's input, and so have set December 31st as the deadline to submit your ideas. Submissions of date ideas, along with the reasoning behind the date, should be emailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org. As Gorka says, "We are sure that between all of us, we can find the best day to commemorate and pay homage to the people who make up the historic and modern Basque Diaspora."
Kern County Christmas Party
The Kern County Basque Club will be hosting its annual Christmas Party on December 10th. The festivities will begin with mass at 10am, celebrated by Monsignor Craig Harrison. After mass, everyone is invited to stay for lunch that will include BBQ Chicken, chestnuts and cider. If you have volunteered during the year, participated in the Klika or dance group, or have played paleta/handball, your lunch is on the house! Santa will also make an appearance. To RSVP, please email Maria Toretta.
Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna Award
Our friends at the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies, and the Jon Bilbao Basque Library were greeted with very good news on the occasion of the International Day of Euskera, December 3rd, or Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna (ENE) in Basque. The recognition, named after this celebration, ENE, was awarded to these entities at UNR to acknowledge the "the tremendous work done in favor of the Basque language and culture in its 50 years of life. In fact, the Center itself is an important symbol of Basque culture, and has spread the Basque language in a more academic way…. We believe it is fair to acknowledge their good work," in the words of the jury at Eusko Ikaskuntza, or the Society for Basque Studies headquartered in Donostia-San Sebastian. In the history of this award that began in 2006, this is only the second time that an organization in the US has received it. The first was NABO in 2009. On behalf of everyone at NABO, Zorionak to the CBS and Basque Library! Biba ziek!
