Chillida Esku Huts Featured in Basque Film Series

The Basque Educational Organization and the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center present the next installment of the Basque Film Series with a special screening of the film Chillida Esku Huts (Chillida Empty Hands). Dr. Larraitz Ariznabarreta from the Center for Basque Studies at the University Of Nevada, Reno will present the film via Zoom, and will also lead a discussion and Q&A after the screening. Father Mike Lastiri (1956-2022)

Father Mike LastiriWe were saddened to hear of Fr. Mike Lastiri’s passing on February 25th.  Many had the opportunity to see and visit with him at the SFBCC’s 40th anniversary festivities, and so it came as quite a shock to many. On behalf of everyone at NABO, we extend our most sincere condolences to his mother Marie, as well as to the rest of his family and many friends. A Rosary will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 – 6:00pm at The
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 10435 Hanford Armona Road in Hanford, California. The funeral Mass will be Thursday, March 10, 2022 – 10:00am at the same location. Per the Lastiri family, only priests and deacons are invited to the reception and burial service. Goian Bego.


Special Tribute to Honor US-Based Bertsolaris on March 12

Special TributeOn Saturday March 12, 2022 NABO will host a special tribute to honor the US-based Bertsolaris, Gratien Alfaro, Jesus Arriada, Johnny Curutchet, Martin Goicoechea and Jesus Goñi in recognition of their contributions over the years at NABO events as well as at other Basque club events, at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center. This tribute will showcase the four active U.S. bertsolaris, along with two bertsolaris from the Basque Country, Sebastian Lizaso and Aitor Mendiluze, in a full ninety-minute bertsolaritza performance, with topics provided by Todor Azurtza beginning at 4pm at the SFBCC.   Real-time English translations of the improvised verses will be projected, provided by bertsolari scholar Xabier Paya.  Joxe Mallea will also provide a special introduction. At 6pm, the performance will be followed by an aperitif and dinner, $50 for adults and $15 for children under the age of 12, with entertainment by accordionist Mercedes Mendive. Reno Zazpiak Bat Mus Tournament and Spring Potluck

MusReno’s Zazpiak Bat Basque Club will host its annual Mus Tournament this Saturday, March 5th, beginning at 8am with registration. Cost to participate is $30, which includes coffee, pastries and lunch, plus club dues $30 for singles and $40 for families. If you have yet to register, please do so before Saturday by emailing The club will also host its annual Potluck in conjunction with the tournament.  The club will provide a meat dish, salad, bread, cheese and wine, but you are invited to bring your favorite side to share.
