Basque Americans Honored
This week, two members of our Basque community received great honors in each of their fields. Jeanine Campos Grech of Campos Brothers Farms was honored on Tuesday by the Marjoree Mason Center’s 37th Annual Top Ten Professional Women and Leading Business Awards. These awards aim to honor outstanding individuals in the Fresno community, while raising awareness for domestic violence. The event honors ten women who have “served as role models and given back to their communities, all while making strides in their professions.” Due to the pandemic, this year’s event was held virtually and featured Andrea “DREA” Kelly as its keynote speaker. Zorionak Jeanine!
Another Basque American honored this week was Blas Uberuaga. Blas was among six Los Alamos National Laboratory physicists elected as a 2020 Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). These fellowships recognize outstanding contributions to science, technology, teaching, or service. Blas was nominated by the APS Division of Computational Physics for “the development of accelerated molecular dynamics methods and their application to the understanding of radiation effects in materials, including the amorphization resistance of complex oxides, and the discovery of a new mechanism for point defect recovery at interfaces.” Blas started at the Los Alamos Lab in 2001, and has been involved in many Department of Energy-funded projects. To read more about these awards and Blas’s nomination click here. Many may know Blas as a delegate for both the Seattle and New Mexico Basque Clubs as a founding member of each. He is also the creator of Buber’s Basque Page the first website dedicated to the Basques, EuskalKultura.eus interviewed Blas about this honor that is available here where he credits his aita for the work ethic he learned at home. Zorionak Blas!
