Noriega Hotel in Bakersfield to Close After 89 Years
After an 89-year run, we were saddened to hear that the Noriega Hotel Basque Restaurant in Bakersfield will not reopen after its closure due to the Coronavirus. Founded in 1893, by Faustino Noriega and Fernando Etcheverry, and managed since 1931 by the Elizalde family, it was the recipient of the Best Classic Restaurant in the United States award by the James Beard Foundation in 2011. It was also the site for many family get-togethers for local Basques, as well as others from the surrounding areas. Many from NABO were also fortunate to gather there last year on the occasion of the NABO convention hosted by the Kern County Basque Club. The LA Times even reported on the closure. On behalf of everyone at NABO, we thank everyone involved with this historic establishment over the years and wish you all the best in your future. Eskerrik asko, mila esker bihotz bihotzetik!
