Ateak Ireki Starts Wait List; Seeks Chaperones

Ateak IrekiNABO is excited to collaborate with Batzen this summer on a youth exchange program in Goierri, Gipuzkoa. Fifty youth from our US Basque communities, ages 16-25, will be living with host families, exploring the Basque Country and studying Basque culture and language at the Maizpide Barnetegi. This year’s Ateak Ireki program, June 29-July 19, has reached capacity however; you can join the Wait List if you are still interested. Everyone on the Wait List will be notified before April 15th if they can join this year’s program. Ateak Ireki is also still reviewing applications for one male and one female Chaperone (ages 26-35) to accompany our youth during the exchange. Utah OdolkiOdolki Jatea in Utah

The Basque Club of Utah is hosting its annual Odolki Jatea this Saturday February 29th at 6:30pm at the St. Vincent’s Benvegnu Center. Dinner will include soup, blood sausage or pork roast, mashed potatoes, salad, bread, cheese and dessert.  Cost of the meal is $15 for adults and kids 12 and under are free.  Bulk sausages will also be available for purchase for $7 a bag.  Mercedes Mendive will also play for everyone’s enjoyment after dinner. briskaEuzkaldunak Briska Classes

If you are in the Boise area and have always wanted to learn how to play Briska, you are in luck! Euzkaldunak will hold Briska classes at the Basque Center on March 1st and March 8th.  Classes will begin at 4pm and will run for one to two hours.  You must be over the age of 10 to participate. Jon Bilbao Visiting Research Fellowship Taking Applications

Jon Bilbao FellowshipThe Jon Bilbao Basque Library in cooperation with the Etxepare Basque Institute have created the Jon Bilbao Visiting Research Fellowship, the goal of which is to support research on the Basque Diaspora.  Eligible candidates would hold a Ph.D. and must be employed as either a professor or a researcher at the university level.  The Fellowship provides a month-long research stay at the University of Nevada Reno between August and December 2020, sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). Los Banos Mus

Los Banos musThe Los Banos Basque Club will host its annual Mus Tournament and Ladies Night Party on Saturday, March 7th at the Los Banos Fairgrounds.  Mus registration will begin at 8am with games starting at 9pm.  Cost of the tournament is $35 per player that includes lunch.  After the tournament, stick round for the Ladies Night Party.  Cocktails begin at 6pm followed by a BBQ Steak dinner.  The evening will also include raffles and performances by the Basque language class and club dancers.  For more information, visit them on Facebook.

Udaleku 2020 Registration

UdalekuRegistration for Udaleku 2020, hosted by the Basque Club of Utah June 21-July 3rd will take place on March 1st at 6pm (PST).  Registration is a two-step process; the first is to fill out an intent to participate form, one per family including all campers from the same household.  If you make the top 100 spots, you will then receive a full application to complete.  For those that don’t make it, you will automatically be placed on a waiting list.  Tuition for this year’s camp is $420 per camper (10% sibling discount available). Campers must be between the ages of 10-15 (10 by September 1, 2020), and financial aid is also available from the Aita Martxel Tillous Fund.  To apply, or for more information, click here.

 

Bertsolari Special Tribute RSVPs Due Thursday, March 5th

Bertsolari Special TributeThe North American Basque Organizations (NABO) will honor the US based Bertsolaris for their generous contributions to our Basque community over the years on March 14, 2020 at a special tribute event.  The event, beginning at 4pm at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center, will consist of a 75-minute Bertso Saioa featuring the four active US Bertsolaris, along with two from the Basque Country, Sebastian Lizaso and Aitor Mendiluze.  NABO is excited and honored as well to have Xabi Paya, renowned Bertsolari in his own right, attend to provide simultaneous English translations of the Bertsos. An aperitif will follow the Bertso Saioa at 6pm, with dinner at 7pm.  Cost of the dinner is $50 and RSVPs should be made by March 5th by filling out this form, emailing Kate Camino at info@nabasque.eus, or by calling (775) 241-3752.
