Basque Government Visit and New Bill Draft

Eusko JaurlaritzaLast week three representatives from Eusko Jaurlaritza, or the Basque Government made a whirlwind trip to the United States. The team comprised of Ziortza Olano, Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Conchi Aranguren, the Delegate of Euskadi in the US and Canada, accompanied by Benan Oregi, technician from the Office of the Basque Community Abroad visited New York City, Reno, Gardnerville, Boise, and wrapped up their visit attending the Kern County Basque Club’s annual festival. The main goal of this trip was to become better acquainted with the US Basque Diaspora, as well as provide news on the new law in the works that guarantees the continuation of their work here and elsewhere. The original Law 8 went into effect in 1994 and has allowed the Basque Government to work with Basque clubs and entities, as well as individuals, (Basques in critical need), as well as to provide funding for activities, and infrastructure. The Basque Diaspora has grown and changed significantly since 1994 and so this new law will hopefully encompass these changes. On Thursday, May 21st, they conducted a workshop that was attended in person at the Basque Museum, as well as online by several people. Benan first provided the history behind the original law, while Ziortza gave us an idea of what the new law would look like and what it hopes to accomplish. A draft form of this law was sent to all NABO member Basque clubs and is also available here. The Basque Government is welcoming input from interested individuals, so please provide them feedback. On behalf of everyone at NABO, we thank these three for all their efforts, and look forward to more opportunities to work together in the future. Eskerrik asko!
