Lehendakari Carlos Garaikoetxea (1938-2026)

Lehendakari Carlos GaraikoetxeaWe were saddened to hear of the passing of Lehendakari Carlos Garaikoetxea, the first Basque president after the Franco era, who passed away of a heart attack at the age of 87. From Navarre, he was deeply involved in setting up Basque institutions following the dictatorship serving as Lehendakari from 1980-1985. He was also a founder of the Eusko Alkartasuna political party leaving a political legacy “linked to the recovery of institutions and the strengthening of self-government” during a key time in Euskadi. On behalf of everyone at NABO our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Goian Bego.

Picon Punch in a Can!

Picon in a canHave you seen it yet? This weekend the Official State Drink of Nevada, the Picon Punch, was unveiled at the JT Basque Bar and Restaurant in its latest version, in a can. The folks at Ferino Distillery in Reno worked closely with Etienne Lekumberry at the JT to formulate this new offering. The unveiling was attended by Governor Lombardo and Assemblymember Bert Gurr whose work was instrumental in the Picon being named the state drink. First-run cans are now available at Ferino Distillery, and after it is launched, they will also become available at the JT and Craft Wine & Beer, with more locations to come. To enjoy some coverage of the unveiling, click here, and here. Thanks to Piconland and Western Public Affairs for use of their content. Zorionak deneri!
