Ateak Ireki Registration Information
As previously reported, the application window is now open for Ateak Ireki 2026. This year’s program, aimed at youth between the ages of 18 and 25, will take place June 27-July 19, 2026. It seems that there has been some confusion regarding registering for the program, so please find some of the points to be considered prior to registration here. The deadline to apply is December 7th and complete information can be found on their website.
NYC Basque Film Festival
The Delegation of the Basque Country to the United States and Canada is excited to invite everyone to the 2025 NYC Basque Film Festival co-organized by the Delegation and the Etxepare Basque Institute. Three Basque films will be featured, December 2nd-4th from 6:30pm-9:00pm at the Village East by Angelika. All showings are free and open to the public, but seats are limited, so reserve your tickets here. More information on the event and the films is available here.
International Day of the Basque Language.
December 3rd marks the 76th Anniversary of Nazioarteko Euskararen Eguna or the International Day of the Basque Language. It is celebrated on December 3rd because that is the feast day of Saint Francis Xavier who spoke Basque and taught it to locals while serving in Eastern and Southern Asia. It is also said that his final words were in Basque. Today, NABO supports a number of classes, in person and online, for anyone wishing to learn Euskara. For more information, click here.
Aspen Carving Event at Basque Library
Please join our friends at the Jon Bilbao Basque Library on Monday, December 1st from 3:30pm-5pm for “Celebrating Lertxun-Marrak.” Many have probably run across the tree carvings left by Basque sheepherders while hiking, so this is an opportunity to meet the experts and get your questions answered. The event will also provide an opportunity to see what it was like to be a sheepherder through virtual reality. Complete information is available here.
