Agustin Guisasola, Pilotari and WWII Veteran
On the occasion of the Day of the Basque Diaspora 2025, on September 8 in Markina, Bizkaia, which recognized the contribution of Basque pelota to the Diaspora, the Association Sancho de Beurko, that leads the research on WWII veterans of Basque descent who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, had published the previously untold story of the jai-alai player from Eibar (Gipuzkoa), Agustín Guisasola, a U.S. Army World War II veteran. Under the direction of Dr. Pedro Oiarzabal, over 2,100 Basque and Basque-American veterans of WWII have been uncovered, which marks the near completion of the research. The next step is to build a national World War II memorial in a U.S. city to honor these veterans. Kern County Basque Club Seeking Volunteers for Fair Booth
Every year the Kern County Basque Club has a booth, Etxola, at the Kern County Fair as one of their largest fundraisers of the year. This entails covering 280 shifts over the 11 days from September 17-28th. They still have a few shifts that need to be covered, so if you would like to volunteer and help them out, please email Maria Torretta.
Presentation on Basque Diaspora of Eastern Oregon
As part of the Basque Diaspora Day celebrations, the Ontario, Oregon Basque Club is happy to announce a presentation by Dr. Lisa Corcostegui about the Basque Diaspora of Eastern Oregon. The event is hosted by the Malheur County Historical Society and will take place today, September 11th. The event will begin with lunch served at 11:30am and the presentation will begin at noon. Cost of the meal is $15, and no RSVP is required. All Historical Society meetings are open to the public and anyone interested is welcomed. For more information, please see their flier.
