Basque Diaspora Day
It’s hard to believe that it is almost September, and so Diasporaren Eguna, Day of the Basque Diaspora, is right around the corner. Celebrated on September 8th this day serves to celebrate Basque culture and identity among Basques living outside of the Basque Country. Events and activities are organized by Basque entities around the world, that are also accompanied by an official event hosted by the Basque Government. This year’s event will take place in Markina-Xemeinen and will feature zesta-punta pilotaris and will take place at the UNI fronton. Let us know what your club/entity is organizing so we can share it with everyone else.
Bill Douglass and Carmelo Urza Honored by the Basque Government
As everyone knows, Jaialdi took place in Boise, Idaho July 29-August 3rd, with many dignitaries from the Basque Country attending including Lehendakari Pradales. On Friday, after attending the NABO meeting, the Lehendakari hosted a reception where William A. Douglass was honored on the 50th Anniversary of Amerikanuak and Dr. Carmelo Urza was presented the Lan Onari award by Lehendakari Pradales and Secretary General of the Basque Government’s Foreign Action Department and Global Euskadi, Ander Caballero. The Lan Onari award is presented to individuals "who have extraordinarily distinguished themselves due to their dedication, constancy, and innovative spirit in their field of work.” Dr. Urza, founder of the University Studies Abroad Consortium that has allowed thousands of students an opportunity to live and study in the Basque Country, among many other countries, was a logical recipient of this award. This award is the second highest distinction awarded by Eusko Jaurlaritza. On behalf of everyone at NABO, Zorionak to both Bill and Carmelo on their honors, both very well deserved, and mila esker handi bat to everyone who made the event possible. Please enjoy these videos of the event provided by Hurtado Etxebarria and Dr. Lisa Corcostegui.
