Basque Australians to Visit U.S. Basque Communities
Forty-two people associated with the Euskal Australiar Alkartea in Gernika, Bizkaia are making their way through Basque-America on their way to Jaialdi. The Euskal Australiar Alkartea is comprised of Australian-Basque immigrants who strive to disseminate information on emigration and the Basque reality of Basque emigration to Australia, besides providing a space for Basque-Australians in the Basque Country to congregate. During their trip they will stop in Chino, Bakersfield, Fresno, San Francisco, Reno, Gardnerville, and Elko where they will enjoy a meal with each of the local Basque communities. If you live in one of these, or are nearby, check with your local club to get the details of each event so you can also welcome them to the U.S.
Basque Government Offers Opportunities for Youth
Eusko Jaurlaritza, the Basque Government, published two great opportunities for our youth this week. The first one, is that the application period for Gaztemundu 2025 is now open. This year’s edition is dedicated to traditional Basque musical instruments and is open to individuals between the ages of 18-35. The deadline to apply is August 21, 2025, at 11:59pm Basque Country time. Applications must be completed through the individual’s Basque club through the BAK system. The Basque Government’s department for External Action has also announced scholarships for the 2025-2026 term. These scholarships are in the following specialties: European Affairs (6 scholarships), Basque Community Abroad (4 scholarships), and External Action and Multilateral Organizations (4 scholarships). All work will be carried out either at the General Secretariat for External Action and Global Euskadi (in Vitoria-Gasteiz), or at the Basque Country delegations abroad. Scholarships for positions in Vitoria-Gasteiz are 16,000 Euros gross each, and those at the delegations are 24,000 Euros gross each. Deadline to apply for these is August 4, 2025 at 11:59pm Basque Country time. These too should be submitted through the BAK system. Detailed information on how to apply is included here.
Jaialdi 2025
After ten years, the much awaited Jaialdi is upon us, also coinciding with NABO’s annual convention meeting, which will be held on Friday August 1st. If you are a NABO delegate and have yet to RSVP for next week’s meeting, please do so ASAP.
Jaialdi’s official dates are July 29-August 3rd, but Basque Week, begins this Saturday, July 26th, and is jam packed with activities for all, sponsored by various Basque entities, and friends in the area.
