MuralWinnemucca Mural Brainstorming Session

Please join the brainstorming session this Friday, April 19th from 1:00pm-3:00pm at the Humboldt County Library in Winnemucca, Nevada. The session is going to ask the question “Why Basque Women came to Winnemucca,” to determine what a new mural will look like. The session will be led by Leire Urbeltz Ph.D. student at the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies, who will take ideas from the session and include them in the mural that she’ll paint at the first Winnemucca Mural and Music Festival May 29-June1, 2025.

 

Reno's Ferino Distillery Now Making Amer Aperitivo

FerinoHave you heard the news?  Ferino Distillery located in Reno, Nevada is now making Amer Aperitivo, formally made by Torani. The Distillery expressed its appreciation to Torani for sharing their recipe, and “out of respect to them and the many generations of Picon Punch Drinkers, we have stayed true to that recipe.”  The first bottles of Amer Aperitivo were delivered throughout northern Nevada beginning on Aprill 11th, and so can now be found at your favorite watering hole. The label has changed a bit, but now also includes a Basque coat of arms in the background. Easter Festivities at Kern County Basque Club

KCBCThe Kern County Basque Club will be celebrating Easter on Sunday at the clubhouse. The festivities will begin with mass at 10am celebrated by Monsignor Frost and Deacon Fred Ansolabehere with the participation of the Klika and choir. This will be followed by an Easter Egg hunt in the park for the kids, and at 12:30pm a roast lamb luncheon will be served. Cost of the meal is $30 for adult Members, $25-Honorary Members, $20 children under 12, adult Non-Members $45, and Non-Member children are $35. The Junior Basque Dancers will also take advantage of the day to hold a Bake Sale. Please consider donating baked goods for them to sell. All proceeds will go to supporting the Junior Basque Dancers. Louis' Basque CornerIf you are in the Reno area this weekend, please join our friends at Louis’ Basque Corner for Easter Dinner. Chef Francisco Vargas, who many may know from his success at the Mus tables, will be preparing Cream of Asparagus Soup, followed by Lamb Shank atop his famous garlic mashed potatoes. Conference “Continuity, Change and Innovation in Basque Culture”

WADCBSPlease join the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies for its 2025 Annual Conference “Continuity, Change and Innovation in Basque Culture” April 18th and 19th organized by Dr. Sandra Ott. The conference will bring together experts from around the world, in various fields of Basque studies, to discuss topics including the Cuadrilla, Euskara, Basque ethnic institutions in the US, Basque festivals, Basque gastronomy, Arantzazu, The Circle of Mountains, and a further discussion about Santazi. The event will also include the book presentation by Julian Zabalbeascoa, on Friday, of his latest work What We Tried to Bury Grows Here. The event is free and is open to the public. All sessions will take place in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center in room 305N, or the Basque Conference Room.
