Bertsolari Festival to Honor Johnny Curutchet
The Basque Cultural Center is excited to share news about upcoming events this month, one is a Bertsolari festival in honor of the late Johnny Curutchet, and the second is a concert by the Basque Pop Rock band, Bulego. N.A.B.O. and the San Francisco Basque Club will pay tribute to the late Johnny Curutchet by hosting a full Bertsolari exhibition, featuring five special guest Bertsolaris from the Basque Country along with N.A.B.O.'s very own Martin Goicoechea along with N.A.B.O.'s Bertso Eskola Bertsolari students. The event will start with a family style luncheon at 12:30pm, which will include the presentation of the Al Erquiaga Bizi Emankorra award and special video tributes from the Basque Country. The bertsolaritza performance will follow at about 2:45pm and will end at around 5:00pm. The improvised verses will be translated into English in real time onto an adjacent screen. Bulego Tour
The Basque Pop Rock band Bulego will be coming to the U.S. and will tour several Basque communities, including Bakersfield, Chino, San Francisco and Boise:

- March 22nd - San Francisco Basque Cultural Center - 9:00pm PT - free admission
- March 23rd - Chino Basque Club - Chino - after the members’ lunch - acoustic set

Upcoming BEO Film Series and Grant Opportunities
The Basque Educational Organization is also excited to share some news about upcoming events. The Basque Film Series will feature 20,000 Species of Bees at San Francisco’s Landmark Opera Plaza Cinema on March 12th at 7pm. The BEO is also excited to announce the launch of two new funds the Women’s Empowerment Fund, and the Creator’s Fund. Both of these funds aim to “support women and creators in shaping communities, promoting culture, and strengthening the Basque identity.” Submissions are due for both grants on May 31st.
Elko Sheepherder's Ball
Please join our friends at the Elko Euzkaldunak Basque Club this weekend for their annual Sheepherder’s Ball and NABO Qualifying Mus Tournament. The festivities begin on Saturday, March 8th at the clubhouse at 5:30pm. The evening will include loads of delicious food, good drinks, and music. Cost to attend is $25, and it is open to the public. Their annual Mus Tournament will take place the next day, Sunday, March 9th again at the clubhouse. Registration will begin at 7am with play beginning at 9am. Saretzen Workshop to Celebrate International Women's Day
Please join the Euzko Etxea of New York, in celebrating International Women’s Day, by participating in the Saretzen workshop, an activity organized in collaboration with students from Mondragon University, and “an opportunity to meet new people and work as a team.” The event begins on Saturday, March 8th at 6pm at the Euzko Etxea. Lagunak Luncheon
In honor of International Women’s Day, the Lagunak Women’s Group will gather in Reno, Nevada at Louis’ Basque Corner, on Saturday March 8th. To date some 80 women from all over northern Nevada, Northern California, and even from Idaho and Washington State have responded to the invitation to get together, to catch up, do some shopping, learn a little more about our Basque culture, and enjoy a great meal. The original women’s luncheon was organized by Neena Laxalt in 2014, but Florence Larraneta Frye decided this was worth pursuing more often, and so the group has met nearly every year since, thanks to Florence’s efforts and her posse. Ventura County Basque Club Mus Tournament
Our friends at the Ventura County Basque Club will host their annual NABO Qualifying Mus Tournament this Saturday, March 8th at the Centro Basco in Chino. Tournament registration will begin at 8am with play beginning promptly at 9am. Cost to participate is $70 per player, which includes member dues, lunch and tournament fees.
