Euzko Etxea of New York's 111th Anniversary
The Euzko Etxea of New York, the oldest in the US, will celebrate its 111th anniversary this weekend with a variety of activities. The festivities will begin with a Basque dance workshop beginning at 10am at the clubhouse. The event is open to the public and is free of charge, so to enroll, click here. After working up an appetite with all that dancing, there will be an Anniversary Lunch from 1pm-4pm. Spots are limited, and priority will go to club members and their guests. Cost of the meal is $45 for adults, $20 for kids, free for infants under 10 years old. The fun continues after lunch with a Mus Txapelketa from 4pm-8pm. This is also open to the public and free of charge. Not only do you get to play Mus, but there will also be a Patxaran tasting. To enroll for this event, click here. On behalf of everyone at NABO we would like to congratulate the Euzko Etxea on 111 years! Here’s to many, many more! Zorionak eta segi hola hola!
Jean Leon Ocafrain (1943-2024)
This week we come with heavy hearts with the news of Jean Leon Ocafrain’s passing. Jean Leon was well-known in the US Basque community and worked hard to perpetuate our culture here. He was a founding member of the Basque Cultural Center, as well as a member of the San Francisco Basque Club. He even served as the NABO Pilota Chair for 13 years and was a fixture at many Basque events in neighboring communities as well. Pilota was so important to Jean Leon that he has named the US Federation of Pelota as the recipient of his memorial donations. On behalf of everyone at NABO, a heartfelt Mila Esker Jean Leon for all you did for our community, and our sincerest condolences to Mayte, their kids, and grandkids as well as to his many, many friends. May he rest in peace, Goian Bego. Jean Leon’s obituary is available here.
