Author Seeks Testimonials about Mendive's Underground Railroad
Our friends at the BEO shared the following with us:
“Meg Ostrum spent more than ten years researching the incredible story of how the Mendive sawmill (Basse-Navarre) operated as a covert intelligence and evacuation service from 1942 to 1944. This WWII Basque-Belgian Resistance operation is detailed in her book The Surgeon and the Shepherd: Two Resistance Heroes in Vichy France (published by the University of Nebraska Press, 2004). A French translation was published by Editions Aubéron in 2011 (2nd edition in 2020), and a Spanish edition was recently released in 2023 by Katakrak (Pamplona). She continues to pursue her research by studying previously inaccessible archival documents and trying to learn more about the young men who avoided being sent to a German war factory through brief employment by the Compagnie d'Iraty in Mendive (in 1943 or 1944) before fleeing to Spain. Meg is appealing to people who might be able to provide new sources of personal testimonials (either oral or written) about Mendive’s underground railroad.”
