Elko Euzkaldunak Festival
Please join the Elko Euzkaldunak Basque Club this weekend, July 6th and 7th, for its 60th Annual National Basque Festival. The festivities will begin on Friday July 5th at the Ogi Deli from 4:30-10:00pm. The evening will include great food and drink and music provided by Amerikanuak and Mercedes Mendive. Saturday’s events will begin at 8:00am at the Ruby View Golf Course with a golf tournament. If you’re not a golfer, you can join the Mus players for a cash tournament at 9:00am at the clubhouse. The official festival kick-off will be at 2pm at the clubhouse and will include dance performances, rural sport exhibitions, and more food and drink. At 6:00pm the action will move to the Elko City Park for handball matches with players from neighboring states. At 9:00pm there will be a public dance, again at the clubhouse. Admission is $20 and music will be provided by Amerikanuak, Mercedes Mendive and DJ Daniel. Sunday’s festivities will begin at 9:00am again at the park for more handball. At 10:00am there will be a Sheepherder’s Bread contest, followed by mass at 11:00am. At noon, there will be a picnic that will include beef, lamb, pork, beans, paella, salad wine and more for $25 a plate. The afternoon will round out with various performances and contests. Lunch with Dale Erquiaga
Dale Erquiaga, recently retired Chancellor of the Nevada System of Education is the focus of an upcoming Nevada Women’s History Project event. Everyone is invited to “Lunch with Dale Erquiaga,” on July 13th at Louis’ Basque Corner from 11:30am-1:30pm, where he will discuss the process of writing Three Wives’ Tales published by the Center for Basque Studies Press. Southern California Basque Club Picnic
This weekend also marks the 78th Annual Southern California Basque Club picnic. The weekend will begin on Saturday, at the Aphessetche Trinketa, with cocktails at 2:00pm followed by pilota at 3:00pm with local players.On Sunday, the festivities will take place at the Chino Fairgrounds and will begin at 11:30am with mass with the participation of local Basque dancers and a Klika. At 1:00pm everyone will have time to shop at the various vendor booths and participate in the Irrintzi and Gateaux Basque Contests. Dance performances will be at 1:00pm and dinner, a lamb BBQ, will be served at 5:00pm. The cost of the meal is $30 for adults and $15 for kids.
