Basque Cultural Center 42nd Anniversary
Please join the Basque Cultural Center in celebrating its 42nd Anniversary Festival February 17-18th. The weekend will be full of events for all ages including a film showing, a presentation by Dr. Pedro Oiarzabal on the Basque WWII veteran project, Joko Garbi and Esku Pilota, great food and drink, and dancing to the music of Amerikanuak. Cost of the meals is $40 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Meal RSVPs and payment are due by February 11th so don’t wait! Gooding Basque Association First Friday Dinner
The Gooding Basque Association will hold its First Friday Dinner this Friday, February 2nd at the clubhouse beginning at 6pm. This month’s menu includes Lamb chops, Lamb Shanks, Solomo with pimentos, Basque Rice, Soup, Salad, Basque Bread and dessert. “Come hungry and leave happy!!!!” For complete information, visit them on Facebook.
Basque WWII Veterans Memorial Fundraising Campaign
We have talked about Memoria Bizia/Fighting Basques a lot in recent issues. As previously reported, since 2015, the Sancho de Beurko Association has carried out research on World War II veterans of Basque descent under the co-direction of Dr. Pedro Oiarzabal, and Guillermo Tabernilla. To date, 1,600 individuals have been identified after researching 46 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico resulting in 1,100 biographies of these individuals and their families. In an effort to complete the research, and eventually establish a physical memorial to our Basque WWII veterans, NABO is launching a fundraising campaign. The goal is to complete research by 2025-2026, so that efforts could then turn to creating “The National Basque World War II Veterans Memorial.” For more information on the project, and the memorial, click here.
