Basque Studies at Boise State University to Hold Conference

ConferenceThe Department of World Languages, Basque Studies section, is hosting an International Conference on Cultural Studies September 14-16 entitled "Translation: Wor(l)ds in Other Wor(l)ds." The keynote speaker Igor Leturia, Ph.D. is the current visiting scholar of the Eloise Garmendia Bieter Basque Studies Chair. As part of the program, Joxan Goikotxea (accordion, piano) and Olatz Prat (voice) will perform  Shakespeare's sonnets sung in Basque. The conference is being presented in conjunction with the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies. The full program can be viewed here.

 

Diasporaren Eguna - Diaspora Day

Diasporaren  eguna

As we reported last week, this Friday, September 8th is Diasporaren Eguna - Basque Diaspora Day. In conjunction with Basque communities around the world, the Basque Government will hold an official event in Gernika Bizkaia. Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu will preside over this event that will take place at 6:30pm Basque Country time in the gardens of Basque Museum in Gernika-Lumo. The event is open to everyone and will be streamed live here: Irekia Eusko Jaurlaritza - Gobierno Vasco :: Agenda (euskadi.eus). The celebration will include a play by Agurtzane Intxaurraga called "Munu Bat Inguruan" and the inauguration of an exhibit entitled "Basques in Australia."

Gaztemundu 2023

Gaztemundu

This week we are sharing more information about Gaztemundu 2023. The official call for applications for the program has been issued

This year the program will be held in Gipuzkoa between December 10th and 22nd. The topic will be cultural management leadership in Basque Clubs. The program will be held in conjunction with the World Congress of Basque Collectivities.

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 as of January 1st, 2023, live outside of the Basque Autonomous Community, and be an established member (at least 3 years) by a Basque organization officially recognized by the Basque Government. Only individauls who have never attended a previous Gaztemundu are eligible. There are 15 spots this year.

If you are interested, you must submit a written summary (no more than 15 lines) and a video (no more than 2 minutes) elaborating a proposal for cultural management in a broad sense.

Applications will be judged as follows:

Video presentation (40 points)
Length and intensity of involvement in a Basque club/organization (40 points)
Knowledge of Euskara (10 points)
Not having ever visited the Basque Country (10 points)

Santa Rosa Basque Club Festival

Santa RosaOur friends at Santa Rosa Basque Club will be holding their festival this Saturday, September 9th at Paradise Valley Firemen's Park. Events will begin with Mass celebrated by Aita Antton Egiguren. The festival will then kick off at 1:00pm. Activities will include Basque dancers, music, weightlifting, and woodchopping. Picons and kalimotxos and other beverages will be availbale at the bar and food menu includes paella, basco burgers, and chorizos. All of this and games too!
