Juliet (Robidart) Campos (1942-2023)
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Juliet Campos last week, founding member of the Fresno Basque Club, and longtime Basque dance instructor. She and her husband, Tony, often attended NABO meetings serving as the Fresno Basque club delegates, and were fixtures at many Basque picnics and Mus tournaments. They generously shared the Campos Bros. Farms to host many Fresno Basque Club picnics as well as Mus Tournaments, and welcomed NABO’s International Mus events on more than one occasion. Juliet and Tony were honored by the Society of Basque Studies in America, and inducted into its Basque Hall of Fame in 2004, in recognition of their many contributions to the maintenance of the Basque culture in the United States. Services for Juliet will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. There will be a viewing at 4:30pm on June 8th with recitation of the Rosary at 5:30pm. The Funeral Mass will be on June 9th at 10 am. On behalf of everyone at NABO, we extend our sincerest condolences to her husband Tony, and her children and grandchildren. May she rest in peace, Goian Bego.

Jean Flesher Elected NABO President, Philippe Acheritogaray Assumes Vice President Role

As many of you know, last weekend NABO celebrated its 50th Anniversary, in conjunction with the Los Banos Basque Club’s 59th Anniversary Picnic. The weekend was jam packed with events beginning on Thursday night with a meet and greet, and concluding on Sunday with the Los Banos picnic events Next week, we will include a more complete report of the happenings, complete with photo gallery, but this week we wanted to announce that at the NABO meeting on Friday, Jean Flesher was elected as NABO President relieving Philippe Acheritogaray from this duty after five years of service. Mila esker handi bat Philippe! Mayi Petracek was also reelected as treasurer, and Kate Camino will continue as NABO secretary having been appointed by Jean. On behalf of everyone at NABO Zorionak deneri, eta sorte on! Here is a note from the new president:
"I'd like to thank all the clubs and their delegates for their vote of confidence in me. I hope to serve NABO well and to strengthen the ties between all of our clubs here in North America and also with the rest of the Basque diaspora in North America that is not yet represented by a member club. I also hope to strengthen our ties with the diaspora outside of North America and with the various entities in the Basque Country as we try to create a love for the Basque language, culture and traditions in not only our children, but in our grandchildren and great-grandchildren so that NABO has a strong and vibrant future. I encourage all members of NABO and of the North American Basque diaspora to feel free to approach me with any suggestions and/or criticisms that you may have. Although I have strong feelings for the future of NABO and my goals that I'd like to achieve, I remain totally open-minded about the ways we can achieve those goals together. Milesker, Eskerrik asko eta goazen aintizina! Gora NABO!"
