Conference and Cultural Evening at UNR
The William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, in collaboration with the Jon Bilbao Basque Library, and REWEST (Research in Western American Literature and Culture) group from the University of the Basque Country is proud to host a conference entitled, “A Basque American Literary Pioneer: Robert Laxalt,” March 9th and 10th at UNR. The aim of the conference is to “commemorate the centennial of Robert Laxalt’s birth by offering new perspectives on the writings of an author who may be regarded as the dean of Basque American literature and one of the most notable twentieth-century voices in Nevada, and the American West.” Conference participants will include scholars and writers from the US and the Basque Country who will explore different topics related to Laxalt’s writing and career, with members of his family also participating.
The conference will be followed by an evening of entertainment on Friday featuring musicians from the Basque Country, bertsolaris from both the US and the Basque Country, and the local Zazpiak Bat Basque Dancers. The performance will take place in the Wells Fargo Auditorium, in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center from 6:00-7:30. The performance will be followed by a no-host dinner at Louis’ Basque Corner.
