Boise EuzkaldunakBoise Euzkaldunak Mus Tournament

The Boise Euzkaldunak will hold their annual NABO Mus qualifying tournament this Saturday, February 11th.  Registration begins at 8:30am with tournament play beginning at 9:30am.  Cost to participate is $25 per person, which includes a light breakfast and lunch prepared by Chef Jesus Alcelay.  For more information, visit their website.

 

EuskalkazetaLatest Issue of Euskal Kazeta

The latest issue of Euskal Kazeta features a story by Zoe Bray on the Borda Ranch in Gardnerville, NV.  Ted Borda and his sisters now run the ranch that has learned to adapt to survive for all these years. The issue also includes a story about the Basques in Ontario Oregon, and a review written by Dr. William A. Douglass, of the book Son of a Basque by Mark B. Jon Bilbao Visiting Research Fellow Application

EtxepareThe call for applications for the 2023 “Jon Bilbao Visiting Research Fellow” is now open.  This program is the result of collaboration between the Nevada System of Higher Education, namely UNR, and the Etxepare Basque Institute.  The aim of this call is to select a Ph.D. researcher who will design a research project about the Basque Diaspora. The fellowship also includes a month stay at UNR.  Deadline to apply is March 2, 2023 and information on how to do so is available here in Basque, English and Spanish.  The application is also available in all three languages.  For any questions, please email Head Basque Librarian, Iñaki Arrieta.

 

Kern County Annual Membership Dinner

Kern County Basque ClubThe Kern County Basque Club will host its annual Membership Dinner this Friday, February 10th at the Wool Growers Restaurant.  The event will begin at 6pm with cocktails, followed by dinner at 7pm.  A 50/50 raffle will also take place with recent prizes totaling $900!  Cost of the raffle tickets is $20 so make sure you come prepared to participate.  For more information, email Maria Toretta.

 

San Francisco Basque Cultural Center 41st Anniversary

SFBCCPlease join our friends at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center on President’s Day Weekend for their 41st Anniversary celebration! The two-day celebration will include children’s activities, Joko Garbi, and Women Paleta Goma players and pilotaris from the Basque Country on Saturday, followed by cocktails and a BBQ steak dinner.  Thanks to the Basque Museum in Boise, and the Basque Educational Organization, the “Basques in California” exhibit, which debuted in the Basque Country in 2019, will also be on display on Saturday. The day will conclude with a dance to the music of Jean Louis Bergara and Beñat Chaubadindeguy.  Sunday’s festivities begin with mass at 10am celebrated by Fr. Rene Iturbe, with the participation of the Elgarrekin choir and Zazpiak Bat Dancers. Mass will also be livestreamed on YouTube.  After mass, the Center will present its Bizi Emankorra Awards to five very deserving individuals, followed by performances by the Zazpiak Bat Klika and Dancers.  Stick around for a drink and BBQ lamb lunch, more pilota and Mozkor Salda (Garlic Soup).  For a complete schedule of events, meal prices and to RSVP, click here.
