Ateak Ireki Registration Opens on February 1st
We are very excited to announce that Ateak Ireki, the program aimed at youth between the ages of 16-25 is coming back this year! The program, initially planned for the summer of 2020, had to be canceled until now, like many other activities due to the pandemic. This three-week program, June 25-July 16, 2023, not only allows participants to learn more about their Basque culture, but also allows them to attend weekly Euskera immersion classes at Maizpide Barnetegi. Participants will stay with host families in Goierri, Gipuzkoa and the program includes visits and events to Bizkaia, Araba, Nafarroa and Iparralde. Thanks to the generosity of program sponsors, there is no fee to participate in Ateak Ireki 2023. Selected participants are only required to cover their roundtrip travel to the Basque Country, as well as health insurance. There are only 50 spots available for this year’s program and registration opens on February 1st and runs through February 28th. To register, please visit their website. NABO Ateak Ireki Coordinator, Argia Beristain, is happy to answer any questions you may have. Please email her at argiaberistain@gmail.com. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity!
Santa Ageda in Boise
Please join the Basque students at the Basque Museum and Cultural Center on January 30th at 7pm to celebrate Santa Ageda. The eve of the feast day of Saint Agatha, is February 4th, but will be celebrated on January 30th to coincide with classes, and to ensure greater attendance. In the Basque tradition, on this day, folks would go door-to-door singing verses accompanied by the beat of their walking sticks setting the pace of the earth. Homeowners have the choice of hearing a song about Saint Agatha, or they may request a prayer for the deceased of their household. In exchange, homeowners may give the singers food, or money. The tradition also includes wearing traditional clothes For more information, click here.
