Sheepherders Ball is Back in Boise

EuzkaldunakAfter a two-year hiatus due to COVID, the Boise Euzkaldunak Basque Club is excited to host the Sheepherders Ball once again this Saturday, December 17th. This event, founded in 1929, which became a charitable event in 1974, has used funds generated by the ball and lamb auction to help families in need ever since. The Basque Foundation Charities chooses a primary recipient annually, and this year they have chosen Angie Dennis.  Angie is the mother of two and is a member of Euzkaldunak, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2021. After pursuing treatment, the cancer unfortunately returned in March of 2022.  Funds raised this weekend will go to Angie and her family to help them through this difficult time.  All donations are tax deductible.  Although the December monthly dinner has sold out, everyone is still invited to join the fun at 8pm for the Oinkari performance, lamb auction and dance to Amuma Says No.  Cost to attend the dance only is $5.  For more information on the Sheepherders Ball, Angie and her family, or to make a donation, click here.

The Frank Bidart Chair is one of the many Chairs of its kind created in universities around the world by the Etxepare Basque Institute.  The main goal of these is to promote the “international presence and visibility of Euskara and Basque studies.” This latest Chair at CSU Bakersfield was named after well-known poet, Frank Bidart, and will focus on promoting research on Basque culture and artistic creation.  Besides Dr. Gamboa and Dr. Arranz, also attending the event were Irene Larraza, Director of the Etxepare Basque Institute; Garbiñe Iztueta, Etxepare’s Director for the Promotion and Dissemination of the Basque Language; and Lynnette Zelezny, President of CSU Bakersfield. Also attending was Miren Agur Meabe, renowned Basque writer and poet who read a selection of her own work as part of the event.  Also in attendance was Unai Telleria, Delegate of Euskadi in the United States.  For more information about the event, click here.  For more information about the Institute at CSU Bakersfield, click here.
