Mary Lou Urrutia Presented with Al Erquiaga Bizi Emankorra Award
Last Saturday, November 12th, NABO President, Philippe Acheritogaray, traveled to Reno to present Mary Lou Urrutia with the newly renamed Al Erquiaga Bizi Emankorra Award at the Zazpiak Bat Basque Club San Martin dinner. As previously reported, Philippe presented the delegates with the idea of renaming the award at the NABO Fall Meeting in Homedale, and everyone enthusiastically agreed. Mary Lou was honored this year for having served as NABO’s Calendar Chair for the last 25 years. On behalf of everyone at NABO, Zorionak Mary Lou!
Chino Basque Basque Club Memorial Mass
This Sunday, November 20th, Aita Antton will be in Chino to celebrate the Chino Basque Club Memorial Mass at 10am at the Chino clubhouse. During mass, there will be a special remembrance of community members who have passed away over the last year. Mass will be livestreamed on the Artzai Ona Facebook Page, and the missal will also be available there. Following mass, there will be a club lunch. CBS Press 20th Anniversary Celebration
The Center for Basque Studies, in collaboration with Agirre Lehendakaria Center and the Jon Bilbao Basque Library, with the generous support of the Hilliard Foundation is Celebrating Twenty Years of the CBS Press November 16th and 17th. The celebration combines talks, book presentations, and music. The Center is honored to welcome renowned Basque author Kirmen Uribe who will present his book Bilbao-New York-Bilbao, as well as Professor Mari Jose Olaziregi, who will present her book entitled Kirmen Uribe: Life Fiction. Josu Okiñena, renowned Basque pianist will also present his latest work, The History of Basque Music, as well as perform two recitals with Alexandre Da Costa, conductor and virtuoso violist. 2022 World Pilota Championships
The 2022 World Pilota Championships recently took place in Biarritz, October 24-29th. Representing the US were several individuals participating in various disciplines, and Chino Basque Club member, Denis Petrissans served as the Left Wall Singles Coach. Team USA reached the semifinals in five disciplines, and won a silver and bronze medal in both Frontennis and Xare.

NABO Pilota Chair, Tony Huarte, has also announced that this year’s NABO Pala Finals will take place this weekend, November 19th, in Boise. Events include Men's Class A and B as well as women and youth categories. If you wish to participate, all you have to do is show up, no team needed. Handball games will also take place.
Two Nevada Basque Restaurants Honored
We are very happy to announce that two Basque restaurants have been honored in Nevada. The first is the JT Basque Bar and Dining Room that received the Douglas County Business Council Spotlight Award for “Preservation, Culture and History,” while the Ogi Deli in Elko won first place in several categories in the Best of Elko County Readers’ Choice Awards. One is more recent, and one is historic, but both reflect our Basque heritage and culinary traditions. Mila esker zuen ahal egina guziendako!
