Annually, Euskararen Eguna: Day of the Basque Language is celebrated on December 3rd. Established in 1949, the goal of this day was to celebrate and promote the Basque language, a celebration that was later formalized at the 1995 World Congress of Basque Collectivities with the collaboration of the Basque Government and Euskaltzaindia, the Academy of Basque Language. This year, Todor Azurtza, created a video in honor of the day featuring our friends in Boise. Mila esker handi bat Todor, eta parte hartu duten guzieri! On egin!
Jaialdi News
As many of you may already know, Jaialdi organizers came to the difficult conclusion that it just was not safe to host Jaialdi this summer. However, Jaialdi will be held in 2025, which also puts it back on its traditional schedule of every five years. Although many are disappointed, everyone understands the reasons behind the decision.
NABO Mus Finals
On November 21st, Mus players from the five regions gathered in Boise to compete in the NABO Mus finals hosted by Boise Euzkaldunak. Two teams from each region advanced and at the end of the day, Esteban Elexburu and Augustine Ugalde, representing the Gooding Basque Association, came out on top. Second place went to Juan Jose Vizcay and Nic Vizcay representing the Fresno Basque Club. These teams will now travel to Santiago Chile in the spring to participate in the MercoMus Championships, which brings teams from all over South America together. US players were invited to participate in this tournament since this year’s International Mus Tournament was cancelled as well. Zorionak deneri!
Eguberri Besta at San Francisco Basque Cultural Center
On December 12th, the Basque Cultural Center’s Women’s Club will host its annual Eguberri Besta. The day will begin at 10:30am with mass celebrated by Fr. Rene Iturbe with the participation of the Elgarrekin Choir and followed by the children’s Nativity Play. At 12:30pm lunch will be served, and Santa Claus will make an appearance after that.
