Basques in California Exhibit Open at Basque Museum

Basques in CaliforniaWe are happy to share some fantastic news from the Basque Museum and Cultural Center in Boise! The “Basques in California” exhibit is now open for everyone to enjoy.  This is the culmination of many years of work by many people that made its debut last October in Bilbao during the 7th World Congress of Basque Collectivities.  The exhibit is based on research conducted by Asun Garikano and her books Kaliforniakoak 1533-1848 and Far Western Basque Country both published by the Center for Basque Studies Press. The exhibit also includes contributions from many others, individuals as well as Basque clubs in California, as well as research conducted by other scholars and researchers on the subject. For more information on when you can visit the exhibit and what protocols have been put in place, please visit their website. Zorionak deneri!

Reno's Santa Fe Restaurant Closes its Doors

Santa FeWe are sad to report that we have lost another Basque restaurant to the Coronavirus.  It was announced on social media that last Saturday, July 11th, would be the last day for the Santa Fe Basque Hotel in Reno, Nevada.  As a sendoff, dinners were provided at only $5 and drinks for $1.  It was feared that the traditional family-style dining at Basque restaurants, made impossible by the protocols in place due to COVID-19, would negatively affect these establishments.  Since the Santa Fe had barely reopened last August after changing hands and a renovation, the closures and restrictions caused by the pandemic were just too great for them to survive.  On behalf of everyone at NABO, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for providing so many great memories to many in our Basque communities over the years.

Pilota Referee Training Opportunity

Pilota Referee TrainingWe have heard of a great opportunity for former pilotaris, or others interested in sports in general.  Xabier Berrueta, President of the US Federation of Pelota has shared information regarding training to become a pelota judge.  The courses, 6 hours in all, will be provided online and may be a natural continuation for former pilotaris, or others simply interested in the sport.  For complete information on how to enroll, please see Xabier’s note here.
