Holy Week and Easter Mass Live Streaming
Aita Antton Egiguren has reached out again this week regarding services for Holy Week and Easter Sunday, all available via streaming on St. Patrick’s Parish and Our Lady of Mercy congregation’s Facebook page. He is asking anyone who may have intentions for Sunday’s mass to please communicate those to him via email. He is currently celebrating mass in English at 7:30 AM Pacific, every day, as well as at 6:30 PM in Spanish, along with praying the Holy Rosary following (around 7pm) in English, Spanish, and Basque. During the Triduum, (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) there won’t be daily masses, however he will continue to pray the Rosary as usual at 7pm. He will also pray the Office of the Hours in English and Spanish beginning at 7am PST, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Holy Thursday, at 3pm the Mass of the Supper of the Lord will be celebrated with three parish priests concelebrating. His note concludes, “I wish you all a very happy and holy week. Stay healthy and in harmony in the families. I know that this confinement period can create tensions and conflicts among the people who love the most: husbands-wives, parents and children... LASAI egon, stay at peace. Smile at all times, try to look at the best of the other...” Missal for Easter Sunday Mass is available here.
Aberri Eguna - Euskal Herria BATERA
We also received a note from Jasone Agirre Garitaonandia, EHBildu’s Secretary for the Diaspora. This year, with everyone being confined to their homes, individuals have organized to create Euskal Herria BATERA, to support the celebration of Aberri Eguna (Day of the Basque Homeland) that coincides with Easter Sunday, from home. They are asking for everyone to print out the message provided here, and take a picture of yourself, or your family on April 12th, Aberri Eguna, and then upload that picture to become part of a great mosaic on its website. In her words, “From the confinement of our homes, with many people suffering, if there was ever a time to act as a nation this is it. Despite all our legitimate differences, we must be able to act TOGETHER. Therefore, this year's Aberri Eguna is a day to show we are a nation and to express our solidarity for those who are suffering.” For more information email, or visit them online. You can find the English version of the sign here.

Iparreko Ibarra Postpones Mus Tournament
We have also heard from the Iparreko Ibarra Basque Club in Rocklin regarding their upcoming Mus Tournament. The board of directors of that club has made the decision to cancel the NABO Mus Tournament scheduled for May 9th due to COVID 19. However, they are planning to reschedule it to coincide with their annual Besta in October, this year in conjunction with NABO’s Kantari Eguna as well as the NABO Fall Meeting. Festivities will take place on Saturday, with the Mus Tournament being held on Sunday, October 11th. Please check their Facebook page for updates.
Jaialdi Postponed to 2021
As many of you may already be aware, organizers of Jaialdi 2020 have decided to postpone the event and reschedule for 2021. The note reads, “This was a difficult decision, but a necessary one. Coronavirus cases are increasing both in Idaho and the United States at large, and we are acting out of an abundance of love and concern for our friends and family around the world.” Jaialdi 2021 is now planned for July 27-August 1, 2021, they have indicated that they are working on the best way to refund folks who may have already purchased tickets to the various events. More information on that will be made available soon on their website that is being updated regularly.
Quarantine Mus
This week we also have a special contribution from NABO Treasurer, Mayi Petracek, sharing one way she and a group of friends have discovered to pass the time while sheltering in place - Quarantine Mus.
With mus tournaments being postponed, and social distancing the new norm, how else can you see your friends and have some fun? On-line mus. Using the on-line program called Ludoteka and using Zoom to see smiles and chat as they played, four ladies spent a couple of hours playing mus. They also represented 4 clubs from 4 different states: Anne Marie Gariador (representing Southern CA Euskaldun Club), Mayi Petracek (representing Colorado Euskal Etxea), Monique Flesher (representing Utah Basque Club), and Gina Espinal-Aguerre (representing Reno Basque Club). They are going to play again this Saturday and will jot down instructions on how to get a game going so you too can play virtual mus. In the meantime, stay safe, healthy, and enjoy.
Mila esker Mayi for sharing this with us. If anyone needs some pointers on how to play Mus, here is a great reference from the NABO Mus website. If anyone else has found a fun way to pass the time with Basque friends these days, and would like to share, please do so by emailing info@nabasque.eus.
