Sheepherder's Ball and Mus in Elko

ElkoThis weekend Elko, Nevada is the place to be!  The Elko Euzkaldunak will host its 9th annual Sheepherder’s Ball at the Basque club located at 1601 Flagview Dr. 89803.  The festivities will begin at 5pm with dinner served at 6pm.  Admission fee is $15 that includes dinner.  After dinner, there will be dancing to the music of Amerikanuak and Mercedes Mendive. On Sunday, the club will host its annual Mus Tournament again at the clubhouse.  Registration will begin at 8am and cost to participate is $20 that includes lunch.  You must be a club member to participate and membership is payable at the door, $30 for singles and $50 for families.  For more information, please text Judy Ugalde at 775-388-4092, or visit them on Facebook.

 

Conference on the Writings of Frank Bergon

WADCBSOn March 13-14 the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies and the Jon Bilbao Basque Library will co-host “Visions of a Basque American Westerner: International Conference on the Writings of Frank Bergon,” a conference that will take place at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center’s Leonard Faculty & Graduate Room. The conference includes presentations by ten scholars and writers from the US and the Basque Country who will “discuss and reflect on Frank Bergon’s works emphasizing Basque themes in his writings.” All events are free and open to the public, but registration is required to attend.  If you would like to register click here. Leading up to the conference, there will also be two book presentations by CBS author, David Romtvedt.  Besides presenting two of his titles, Zelestina Urza and Buffalotarrak the author will also delight the audience with some Basque music accompanied by his daughter Caitlin Belem Romtvedt.  For complete information on the conference and these book presentations, please click here.

 

Carmelo Urza Scholarship

Carmelo Urza ScholarshipIf you are planning to attend a USAC program next fall in either Bilbao or San Sebastian, check out the Carmelo Urza Scholarship for study abroad in the Basque Country.  Eligible applicants must be a member of a NABO club, or a child of a NABO club member.  The scholarship is for $2,000 and is awarded each fall and spring semester. Applicants are also automatically considered for additional funding through USAC. Pierre "Pete" Gratien Salla (1934-2019) Goian Bego

Pete SallaWe were saddened to hear of the passing of Pete Salla.  Pete not only served as a Winnemucca Basque Club Delegate for several years, but later also became a fixture at NABO Mus Tournaments all over Northern Nevada.  On behalf of everyone at NABO, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, and friends.  To read Pete’s obituary, click here.
