Wrap-up of Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko
As many of you may already know, the 34th Annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering took place last week in Elko, January 29-February 3rd. This year's event was special in that it also incorporated the Basques and their contribution to the western lifestyle. As such, Basques from all over the world were invited to participate in the program, that included academic presentations, panels, talks, demonstrations, workshops, performances and everything in between. Some of the local Basque groups featured included: Amerikanuak, Elko Ariñak Dancers and Melidokoa, Ardi Baltza, as well as David and Caitlin Romtvedt from Buffalo, Wyoming, and "local" bertsolaris Martin Goicochea and Jesus Goñi. Bertsolaris from the Basque Country were also in attendance, Miren Artetxe, Oihana Iguaran, and the 2017 Basque Country Bertsolari Champion, Maialen Lujanbio. Not only did they perform at various venues, visited schools, and spoke about their experiences, but they also participated in a conference put together by the Center for Basque Studies and Basque Library on Monday and Tuesday, accompanied by Jone Miren Hernandez from the University of the Basque Country, and other CBS faculty and guest speakers. If you weren't able to get to Elko and want to get a better feel for the event, please visit this link and scroll through the articles. There, you'll read more about the Basques' participation in the poetry gathering, as well as in other extracurricular activities that took place in conjunction with the event. Also check out the video below. Zorionak to everyone who worked hard to make this year's gathering a great success!
