Jean Gaztambide (1929-2018)
We come to you with heavy hearts this week after learning of the passing of Jean Gaztambide in Salt Lake City. Not only was Jean a long-time NABO delegate for the Basque Club of Utah, but he was also the husband of long-time NABO president, Mary Gaztambide. Mary and Jean were fixtures at NABO meetings and there was not a friendlier man than Jean. He made everyone feel at ease, and was always ready to share a drink, song or game of Mus with whomever he met. His and Mary's dedication to perpetuating the Basque culture went far beyond NABO. In their local community, their home served as the unofficial clubhouse for years. The highlight of any NABO meeting in Salt Lake City had to be the mus party at their home on the Sunday after. They also raised their children to be active members of the Basque club and dance group Utahko Triskalariak, and their grandchildren have followed suit. Growing up in Buffalo, WY, the highlight of my summers was to see the motorhomes full of Triskalariak dancers roll into town driven by Jean, and Jaime Sangroniz for our annual picnic. I'm sure this was also the case for many other Basque clubs as well. On behalf of everyone at NABO, we extend our most sincere condolences to Mary, Marc, Denise, and Dan and their families. Jean's obituary can be read here. Goian Bego.

Gernikako Arbola Census
Today we received a note from the Basque Government's Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad asking for some help. The Juntas Generales (General Assemblies) of Bizkaia's presidency is hoping to register all of the Tree of Gernika saplings there are around the world, and so they are conducting a census. If your Basque club or entity has one of these saplings, please take a minute to fill out the survey. Once completed, please return the information requested via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please direct all questions regarding the form to this email as well.
