Trinquete World Championships in Buenos Aires
On November 20-25th a US team participated in the Under 22 Trinquete World Championships in Buenos Aires. We would like to thank Xabier Berrueta, President of the US Pilota Federation, for providing us with this summary of the tournament. On behalf of everyone at NABO, we would like to congratulate the entire USA team, and thank you for representing Basques in the United States so well! Zorionak, eta mila esker!!
Team USA PILOTA competed in the Under 22 World Championships of Trinquete in Buenos Aires, Argentina over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The USA competed in Paleta Goma Neskak, Eskuz Singles and for the first time ever Xare. The coaches and players were composed of Bearnaise and Basque American players who compete in Europe. With the exception of Quentin Bovis (born in Alabama) all the players have roots in San Francisco. BCC member families Acheritogaray, Michelena and Moustirats can be proud of their cousins who represented the Stars and Stripes.
Team USA Neskak was represented by Laura Saldumbide and Amaia Hirigaray as they traversed the "group of death" of eventual Gold Medalists Argentina, Bronze Medalists France, and 30 Meter Gold Medalists Mexico improving during the week and culminating with a satisfying win against Chile finishing 6th.
USA Eskuz PILOTA was composed of Iban Saldumbide and Patxi Martiarena. With victories against Argentina and Uruguay and a tough close loss to eventual Bronze Medalist France, Eskuz PILOTA USA would run into a roadblock in eventual champion Mexico. A proud and respectable 4th place.
Team USA Xare composed of Sebastian Etcheberry and Quentin Bovis shocked the PILOTA world with stunning victories over Spain and Argentina to only be finally defeated by France in the final. Special thanks to BCC Member Olivier Sid Bie for helping coach the players along the way. At the time of GEE publishing, Team Xare was playing in Tournaments in Argentina until the 4th of December.
Overall a great experience for the young players with more opportunities to come in the coming years.
