Juan Braña (1959-2016)
We are once again deeply saddened to report that our Basque community has suffered another loss. Juan Braña passed away in Reno on February 6th after complications from cancer. Juan was born in Almandoz, Nafarroa and came to the US at the age of 18. He is best-known as an aizkolari (woodchopper) and was always available to compete at any and all Basque festivals. He passed the love of this sport on to his daughter Stephanie, and father and daughter could be seen chopping side by side at many festivals. Juan also coached wood chopping at the University of Nevada, Reno for a time. He was an avid Mus player, and participated in several Basque club Mus tournaments in Nevada and California every spring. Services for Juan will be held on Monday, February 15th at 11am at Our Lady of Snows in Reno. To hear more about Juan's life, in his own words, in Basque, click here. On behalf of everyone at NABO, our heartfelt condolences to Juan's family and to everyone who loved him. Goian Bego.
