NABO Convention

We wanted to let you know about other special events that will be held at this year's NABO Convention hosted by the Southern California Basque Club in conjunction with its 70th Anniversary Celebration. Besides the normal convention activities, NABO meeting, dancing, rural sports, great food and drink, this year's convention will also take time to recognize five individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the Basque culture on the NABO level. The Bizi Emankorra – Life Achievement Awards for this year will be presented to: Jean Baptiste Aguerre, Xavier Aphessetche, Jean Baptiste Bidegaray and Juan Braña and Bernardo Yanci posthumously. Please come out and thank these individuals, and their families, for all that they have done, not only for their local Basque communities, but beyond. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, July 3rd, during the afternoon performances.

TxerrikiAlso on Sunday afternoon, the NABO Txerriki – Pork Fest Contest will be held at 4:30pm at the Chino Fairgrounds. Here individuals are given the chance to present their chorizo, lukainka, or blood sausage (tripota/morcilla) to see how it measures up against their friends' products. Interested individuals need to provide 5lbs. of whichever homemade sausage they are presenting, and the judging will be done by a jury that will blind taste them. To enter the contest please email, and for complete contest rules, visit the NABO website.

Nevada Governor Issues Proclamation Regarding Basque Heritage

We also found out that Nevada's Governor, Brian Sandoval, has declared June 29, 2016 as a day in honor of Basque Heritage and Culture in Nevada. Spurred by the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and the involvement of many members of the Nevada Basque community in the event, the Governor made this proclamation in honor of Basques, both past and present, in recognition of their contribution to the development of the state. On behalf of NABO we would thank the Governor for this recognition. The proclamation is available here.
