Fresno Basque Festival
The Fresno Basque Club will be hosting its 39th Annual Basque Festival on Saturday May 7th at Rancho Vista del Rio (the Borba Ranch). Gates will open at 9am and mass will begin at 11am. After mass, a BBQ Lamb lunch will be served that will cost $15 for adults, $6 for children 12 and under, and children under 6 are free. After lunch there will be a parade, Basque dance performances as well as a performance by the Klika. Chorizos will also be available for purchase. Bizkaia Talent, in partnership with the Cenarrusa Foundation for Basque Culture is looking for applicants for its 2016 Leadership Program for Building Basque American Partnerships. Eligible applicants will be between the age of 30 and 50 and the deadline to apply is April 30th. The goal of the program is to promote "in situ knowledge about the scientific, technological, business, institutional and cultural reality of the USA/Canada and the Basque Country" in highly qualified people on both sides of the Atlantic, while also promoting personal and territorial bonds between these individuals. Txitxiburduntzi in Connecticut
The New England Basque Club will be hosting its annual Txitxiburduntzi Celebration on May 14th at Riki Lasa's Farm in Connecticut (426 South Grand Street, Suffield CT 06093). The events will begin at noon with a Basque rural sports exhibition including aizkolaris (wood-chopping), sokatira (tug of war), txingaruten (weight carrying), txokor batzen (corn cob pick-up), and harrijasoketa (weight lifting). Afterwards, a meal consisting of roasted pig, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and side dishes, along with dessert will be served. Everyone attending is asked to bring a beverage of their choice, and a contribution of $15/person, or $5/child will be collected to sustain the club's activities. Real Sociedad to Play in San Jose
OK, Real Sociedad fans, now it's your turn to see your team in action in the US! The Txuri Urdin will travel to California, after league competition concludes, to challenge the San Jose Earthquakes on May 18th at the Avaya Stadium. They will then travel to Houston, Texas where they will compete in the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup on May 24th. The proceeds from this tournament are donated to a different charitable cause each year. While in the US, they would also like to meet their fans and Basques in the area.
