William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies
Yesterday, November 3rd, nearly 150 people gathered at the University of Nevada Reno, for the renaming ceremony of the Center for Basque Studies and the Basque Library. The two were officially renamed for co-founders William A. Douglass and Jon Bilbao, and from now on will be known as the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies and the Jon Bilbao Basque Library. The ceremony began with co-director Sandy Ott welcoming everyone in attendance as well as recognizing several distinguished individuals in the crowd including: Governor Brian Sandoval, Attorney General Adam Laxalt, Ander Caballero, Delegate of the Basque Government in the US., Igor Camaño and Koldo Atxutegi from the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, Chief of Staff and Director of Foreign Relations respectively, University President Mark Johnson, NABO president, Valerie Arrechea, and Basque Consortium director John Ysursa. She then introduced Iban Bilbao, Jon Bilbao's son, who made remarks on behalf of his family. After remarks by several, including the Governor presenting Dr. Douglass with a certificate of recognition from the state of Nevada, a cocktail reception ensued. New Issue of Boga: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
The latest issue of BOGA, Basque Studies Consortium Journal by Basque Studies at BSU, is now available online. This issue includes scholarly articles along with a look back at two 40th Anniversary celebrations; that of the publication of Amerikanuak by Bill Douglass and Jon Bilbao, and that of the Boise-Oñati study abroad program. This journal is Boise State's first online scholarly journal as well as being the only English language journal of Basque Studies. Seeking Nashville Area Basques
We're asking you, our readers, to help us spread the word about a Basque endeavor in Tennessee. Nicole Yraguen Wilbur and Tom Fouce and friends are looking for other Basques in the Nashville area with the purpose of exploring the possibility of forming the first Tennessee Basque club.
