NABO Txerriki Contest
We wanted to remind everyone that NABO's 5th annual "Txerri-Besta" or Txerriki will take place this year, not at convention in Boise, but in Gardnerville at the Mendiko Euskaldun Cluba's annual picnic on August 8th. Anyone interested in competing is encouraged to bring 5lbs of homemade chorizo, lukainka or tripota/morcilla along with them to Kantari Eguna. Entries can be made by individuals or organizations. Jaialdi Bone Marrow Drive
As everyone knows, Jaialdi will take place next week July 28-August 2nd in Boise, Idaho. This is a great opportunity not only to enjoy our community, but also to give back. That is why the National Bone Marrow Donor Program will be on hand to register new individuals for the Be the Match Registry. Individuals who share common origins are more likely to be a match for someone needing a bone marrow transplant. That is why it is vital that as many Basques register as possible to be able to help Basques both here and abroad. If you have not registered yet, please take advantage of their presence at Jaialdi next week to do so. Please read this note from John Philpott from the NMDP.
Luhartz and Taberna Ibiltaria at Eusko Etxea of New York
Many artists are coming to the US for Jaialdi, but are also taking advantage of their stay to visit and get to know Basques in other communities. That is why the Eusko Etxea of New York invites everyone to the clubhouse on Sunday, July 26th at 8pm to enjoy a concert by Luhartz and Taberna Ibiltaria. Luhartz, a crowd favorite in Basque America, combines the best of traditional Basque music with a modern rhythm section and tons of energy. Originally from Bizkaia, Taberna Ibiltaria is a group of 20 singers who have a passion for Euskera and traditional Basque song. The concert is free and open to the public, but due to limited space, RSVPs are encouraged by emailing Iban Ubarretxena. On the day of the event the bar will open at 7pm and there will be sandwiches available for purchase.
Bertshow at the JT Basque Bar and Dining Room
Another group coming for Jaialdi, but also taking advantage of their stay in the US is Bertshow who will be in Gardnerville at the JT Basque Bar and Dining Room Monday July 27th. Come for dinner between 5 and 6pm and the show will follow at 8pm. This a unique opportunity to hear the Basque oral tradition of Bertsolaritza with a new flair. The show brings together bertsos and pop and folk melodies summarizing the history of the Basques in song. For more information please visit the JT on Facebook.
