Danborrada New York-Style

DanborradaThe Euzko Etxea of New York invites everyone to join them in celebrating the Danborrada on January 27th beginning at 7:30pm. The evening will include no-host cocktails, followed by dinner and playing the Danborrada. Cost of dinner is $40 per person not including alcohol, and kids will be served mac and cheese. If you need a drum to play, you can simply take a coffee can that can be attached around your waist with a rope, and decorate it with the attached picture. Carmelo Urza Scholarship

Urza ScholarshipUSAC and NABO are excited to partner on the Carmelo Urza Scholarship for study abroad in the Basque Country. Dr. Carmelo Urza, founder and CEO Emeritus of USAC (University Studies Abroad Consortium), credits inspiration gathered from NABO and its member organizations, in helping him create USAC. As such, a new $2,000 Scholarship is now available exclusively to students who are NABO members, or whose parents are NABO members, and are attending the USAC Bilbao or San Sebastian, Spain study abroad program during either fall or spring semester. Elligible students must have a 3.2 GPA or above, and the deadline to apply is April 1, 2018 for Fall 2018, and November 1, 2018 for Spring 2019. Basques and Buckaroos at National Cowboy Poetry Gathering

Cowboy PoetryThe 34th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering will take place this year in Elko, NV January 29-February 3rd. Produced by the Western Folklife Center, the Gathering "is an international festival that honors the arts, culture and traditions of the rural west…." This year's event won't just be the gathering place for renowned cowboy poets, crafters, cooks, and musicians, but will also feature several Basque artists from Basque-America, and the Basque Country including Bertsolariak Miren Artetxe, Oihana Iguaran, and Maialen Lujanbio, recent winner of Euskadi's 2017 Bertsolari Championship. Besides performing alongside local bertsolaris, Jexux Goñi (Reno, NV) and Martin Goikoetxea, (Rock Springs WY). Artetxe, Iguaran, and Lujanbio will also participate in a conference organized by the Center for Basque Studies on the topic of "The Role of Women in Basque and American Oral Poetry," on Monday January 29th and Tuesday January 30th. Besides Bertsolaritza, crowds will also have the opportunity to enjoy other Basque performers including local dance groups, Elko Ariñak and Ardi Baltza, and the music of Mercedes Mendive, as well as David Romtvedt and his daughter Caitlin, and Amerikanuak.
