Mariann Vaczi Successfully Defends Dissertation on Basque Soccer Culture

The Center for Basque Studies is proud to announce the successful dissertation defense by Mariann Vaczi, Ph.D. candidate on April 22nd.  Mariann’s dissertation was entitled, “Sport, Nation, Gender: Soccer Culture among the Basques” and dealt largely with the Athletic Bilbao soccer team.  Mariann spent a year and a half in Bilbao researching the team and gained unique access to its fans, players and managers.  Mariann’s research was so outstanding that she was also awarded this year’s University of Nevada, Reno’s Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award, as well as the Outstanding International Graduate Student Award.  Originally from Hungary, Mariann also studied Basque and became fluent in Spanish which also greatly facilitated her research.  Zorionak Mariann!

Ibon Mendibelzua Appointed as Delegate of Euskadi in Mexico

Ibon MendibelzuaWe have also learned this week that Ibon Mendibelzua has been appointed as the Delegate of Euskadi in Mexico.  Having served as the Delegate of Euskadi in Brussels, Mendibelzua comes to the job with a great deal of experience.  This appointment also restores the Mexican Delegation that had been previously dependent on the Delegation of Euskadi in New York, during the Patxi Lopez administration.  Besides ties to Mexico, through his mother’s family, we have learned that Ibon also studied at UNR from 1989-90 and was involved in the early days of the Zenbat Gara Dantzari Taldea that originated at the University.  We wish Ibon every success in his new endeavors.  To read more, EuskalKultura.com
