Basque Government Office to Open in Boise

Boise, Idaho - Photo - Lisa CorcosteguiAs many of you may know, during Lehendakari Patxi Lopez’s visit to Boise in 2010, an agreement of collaboration was signed between the Basque Government and the State of Idaho to deepen the economic, educational and cultural ties between Idaho and Euskadi. Part of this agreement included the establishment of satellite offices in both countries, one in the Basque Country for a representative from Idaho, and another in Boise for a Basque Country representative. We have just received word that the office in Boise will open on April 1 and that Miren Perez Eguireun will be in charge there. Many of us had the pleasure of meeting her at the NABO meeting this fall in Mountain Home.
Miren can be reached via email at: m-perezeguireun@ej-gv.es

Euskaldunak of Quebec Combine Carnival and Fashion in Zortzi

We have also received word from our friends at the Euskaldunak of Quebec Basque Club in Montreal, about various activities that they have been involved in. First, the program Zortzi was a great success in both Montreal and New York. Christophe Pavia, from Hendaia and Adelaide Daraspe, club president from Irun, are the creators of Zortzi a show that incorporates Basque carnival with Pavia’s talent for creating hairstyles. This time his styles resembled the hats worn by the joaldunak. The event took place in Quebec on March 7th with the Berriozarko Harizdi Zanpantzarra also performing. All was possible, in part, due to the support of the Euskal Kultur Erakundea (Basque Cultural Institute of Iparralde). The event was a great success! Following the performance in Montreal, the group traveled to New York where they repeated the show and were also very well received in at New York’s Euzko Etxea. Aberri Eguna in New York
Aberri Eguna - Vintage PosterEaster Sunday also marks another very important date in the Basque Country, Aberri Eguna or Day of the Basque Homeland. Although this event is celebrated by Basques around the world, one of the best-known celebrations in the US takes place annually at New York’s Euzko Etxea. This year’s event is extra special since it is part of the club’s Centennial events and will include a tribute to the club’s presidents past and present. It also includes the Berriozarko Harizdi Zanpantzarrak performing in McCarren Park. Download complete information
