For Your Bookshelf: The Last Shepherd

In the author’s own words, “The Last Shepherd is the story of a young man’s search for an identity that encompasses two very different cultures and one complex, scattered family. Mathieu Etcheberri (a second generation Basque-American) must embark on a journey to his homeland in the Pyrenees Mountains of France in order to unravel the secrets of his family. Matt's often humorous journey of discovery centers on his learning the importance of his heritage and solving the mysteries of the family he thought he knew while discovering the wonders of the family he never knew existed.” To read more about the book, as well as its author, please go to www.martinetchart.com. The book is available for sale from the University of Nevada, Press or on any other number of websites.
Travel with USAC from Traditional Cookery to Haute Cuisine

USAC
or the University Studies Abroad Consortium at the University of Nevada,
Reno has been providing study abroad opportunities in the Basque Country for
30 years. Since the very beginning, in 1983, the
program has included a very popular cuisine class. Not only do these
classes provide a unique opportunity to eat really good food, they also
provide another window into Basque culture and the gastronomic societies
there. Here are a couple of great videos for more information on
either the
Donostia or
Bilbao programs.
Request for Diaspora Obituaries
We also received a message from Iban Gorriti from the Historical Memory/Obituary section of the Deia newspaper in the Basque Country. He is interested in including obituaries of Basques who pass away in the US in their newspaper. Along with the obituary, he would appreciate it if the following information was also included, where the person was from originally, his/her role in the Basque club/community in the US , as well as his/her profession. These can be sent to Iban directly at igorriti@bizkaia.eu.
